Treatment Potency Rating (TPR)
Overview
The Treatment Potency Rating (TPR) is our custom-built rating system which allows users to see how potent a given treatment modality is at a glance, while taking into account multiple clinical, empirical and anecdotal parameters.
We look at the treatment’s mechanism of action, its natural compatibility with the body (or bio-compatibility), evidence of efficacy through clinical trials and anecdotal reports, longitudinal and historical data, side effect profile, peer reviews, duration and recovery time, cost-effectiveness, requisite provider expertise, and suitability for specific conditions.
The point is to help distil complex, often scattered and difficult-to-find medical and ancillary information into an easy-to-mentally-digest preview underpinned by the expertise of our medical writing staff.
Rating Criteria
In this section, we’ll preview each parameter we use to estimate the Treatment Potency Rating (TPR) and overall score.
In the latest version of our TPR, there are 9 parameters and 1 overall score.
- Overall Score: Here, we add the overall score out of 10. The higher the score, the more potent the treatment.
- Mechanism of Action (MoA): Here we show how the treatment works, in an easy to understand manner.
- Evidence For Efficacy: We pull all of the available worthwhile evidence such as clinical trials, studies, empirical evidence and anecdotal reports.
- Longitudinal Data: We trace back the treatment’s history, i.e. when was it approved, how long has it been used, etc.
- Side Effect Profile: We showcase the risks and potential side effects associated with the treatment.
- Treatment Duration: The total number of sessions required to achieve minimum effectiveness.
- Recovery Time: How long does the recovery last, i.e. what is the expected downtime post-treatment.
- Cost-effectiveness: Here we assess the treatment value versus cost.
- Provider Expertise: Here we propose what level of expertise or specialist knowledge is needed to administer the treatment correctly.
- Best Suited For: Specific conditions or symptoms the treatment is most effective against.
The point here is to provide a ‘comprehensive overview’ and not just look at individual, standalone variables in a vacuum.
To see how the parameters interrelate to form potential compounding benefits or drawbacks.
That’s our goal. To equip the users with as much transparent, objective data as possible helping them navigate the medical system with more clarity.
Of course, if it wasn’t evident already, our Treatment Potency Rating (TPR) has limitations, and isn’t medical advice, nor substitution for a consultation with a healthcare professional.
It’s just a very information-dense preview, which you can use when discussing each treatment with your doctor or healthcare provider.
Updates and Revisions
We created Treatment Potency Rating (TPR) with dynamic, iterative improvements in mind. Meaning, we update it regularly to reflect the latest advancements and empirical evidence in the medical literature.
We re-evaluate the existing body of science, track the results of any pertinent clinical trial, and proactively gather expert opinions.
But we also value anecdotal reports. Specifically, for new-to-market treatments which yet lack longitudinal clinical data.
